# StatsMapped (Ireland) knowledge bundle

Metrics, datasets, caveats and comparability verdicts behind StatsMapped, generated from its own metadata.

The bundle root is /okf/ : links that start with / are relative to it (OKF v0.2, section 6.1).

## Metrics

- [Adults living with parents by age (%)](/metrics/adults_living_with_parents_pct.md): Adults living with parents by age (%) as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Average distance to workplace (km)](/metrics/avg_commute_distance_km.md): Average distance to workplace (km) as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Average weekly rent (Census)](/metrics/avg_weekly_rent_census.md): Average weekly rent (Census) as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Babies' names](/metrics/babynames.md): Published by CSO for Ireland as a whole -- there is no county breakdown, so this cannot be mapped by area.
- [Bathing water quality](/metrics/bathing_water_quality.md): Share of a local authority's EPA-designated bathing waters rated 'Excellent' that year, from the Environmental Protection Agency's annual assessment.
- [Cattle numbers](/metrics/cattle.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in cattle numbers, published by CSO for each county.
- [Ethnic or cultural background](/metrics/census_ethnicity.md): Usually resident population by ethnic or cultural background, from Census 2016 and 2022.
- [Residence one year before census](/metrics/census_migration.md): Usually resident population aged 1 and over by where they lived one year before Census Day, from Census 2016 and 2022 -- same address, elsewhere in the county, elsewhere in Ireland, or outside Ireland. County-level in-migration flow, distinct from CSO's national-only annual migration estimate.
- [Religion](/metrics/census_religion.md): Usually resident population by religion, from Census 2016 and 2022 — Catholic, other religion, no religion, or not stated.
- [Travel to work](/metrics/census_travel_to_work.md): How the usually resident population aged 5 and over travels to work, from Census 2016 and 2022.
- [Commencement notices](/metrics/commencement_notices.md): Residential units with a commencement notice filed, by local authority, per month -- CSO HSM13. Sits between planning permission and completion in the build pipeline: a notice means construction is about to start, not that a home is finished.
- [Company formations](/metrics/company_formations_per_month.md): New company registrations by county, per month -- a real-time signal of business formation activity, from CRO's own registration filings.
- [New dwelling completions](/metrics/completions.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in new dwelling completions, published by CSO for each local authority and, at a finer level, for each local electoral area.
- [Consumer Price Index (all items)](/metrics/cpi_all_items.md): Consumer Price Index (all items) as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Recorded crime](/metrics/crime.md): Recorded crime cannot be mapped by county: CSO publishes it by Garda Division, and divisions do not line up with county boundaries -- some cover several counties, and Cork and Dublin are each split between more than one. Click any county to see its divisional figures instead.
- [Deprivation index](/metrics/deprivation_index.md): Colour shows each area's Pobal HP Deprivation Index score for 2022, the population-weighted average of its electoral divisions. It is a relative measure: higher is more affluent, below zero is more disadvantaged than the country as a whole.
- [Disposable income per person](/metrics/disposable_income_per_person.md): Household disposable income per person, by county -- CSO's own modelled estimate, not a direct survey count (see caveats).
- [Awarded council tenders](/metrics/etenders.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in the value of awarded council tenders, published via eTenders for each local authority.
- [Council single-bid tender rate](/metrics/etenders_single_bid_rate.md): Colour shows the share of each council's awarded tenders (with a recorded bid count) that had only one bid -- no competing offer. A small number of awards can make a small county's rate swing sharply; see each area's own figure for its underlying award count before comparing it to a larger county's.
- [Homelessness](/metrics/homelessness.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in adults in emergency accommodation, published by DHLGH for each of the 9 homeless regions. Areas in the same region share a colour, because that is the level the figure is published at.
- [Hospital discharges](/metrics/hospital_discharges.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in hospital discharges by diagnosis, published by CSO for each county.
- [Housing affordability (years of income)](/metrics/housing_affordability_years.md): Years of a typical person's disposable income it would take to buy the median-priced home in the county -- median sale price divided by disposable income per person.
- [Council expenditure per capita](/metrics/la_budgets_expenditure_pc.md): Colour shows each council's adopted gross expenditure per resident, from DHLGH's Local Authority Budgets.
- [Council own-source income share](/metrics/la_budgets_income_share.md): Colour shows the share of each council's income raised itself, from DHLGH's Local Authority Budgets.
- [Live Register](/metrics/live_register.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in Live Register claimants, published by CSO for each county.
- [Median weekly earnings by age](/metrics/median_weekly_earnings_by_age.md): Median weekly earnings by age as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Migration](/metrics/migration.md): Published by CSO for Ireland as a whole -- there is no county breakdown, so this cannot be mapped by area.
- [Mortgage accounts in arrears](/metrics/mortgage_arrears.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in the number of principal-dwelling-house mortgage accounts in arrears, nationally — Central Bank of Ireland's own quarterly count, combining bank and non-bank lenders.
- [Mortgage rate](/metrics/mortgage_rate.md): Published by the Central Bank of Ireland for Ireland as a whole -- there is no county breakdown, so this cannot be mapped by area.
- [NTPF inpatient / day case waits](/metrics/ntpf_ipdc.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in inpatient/day-case waiting-list numbers, published by NTPF per hospital and mapped to the hospital's county.
- [NTPF outpatient waits](/metrics/ntpf_op.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in outpatient waiting-list numbers, published by NTPF per hospital and mapped to the hospital's county.
- [Owner-occupied households by age (owned outright)](/metrics/owned_outright_by_age.md): Owner-occupied households by age (owned outright) as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Owner-occupied households by age (with mortgage)](/metrics/owner_occupied_with_mortgage_by_age.md): Owner-occupied households by age (with mortgage) as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Persons at work](/metrics/persons_at_work.md): Number of people at work, by county of residence -- a real employment base, not a claimant count.
- [Dwelling units granted permission](/metrics/planning_permission_units.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in the number of new dwelling units — houses and apartments — covered by planning permissions granted, published by CSO for each local authority. Counts homes, not permissions: a 100-apartment scheme counts as 100.
- [Planning permissions granted](/metrics/planning_permissions.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in the number of planning permissions granted for new dwellings -- each permission counted once, not the number of dwelling units it covers -- published by CSO for each local authority and, at a coarser level, for each region.
- [Population](/metrics/population.md): Population for each county and local authority, from CSO's Census of Population — the same figures used to calculate per-capita rates elsewhere on this site.
- [Population by age, 1926-2016](/metrics/population_by_age_1926_2016.md): Population by age, 1926-2016 as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Population by local authority](/metrics/population_by_county.md): Population by local authority as published and held by StatsMapped.
- [Community service orders](/metrics/probation_community_service_orders.md): Colour shows the year-on-year change in the number of community service orders made, published annually by The Probation Service for each county.
- [Probation referrals from court](/metrics/probation_referrals.md): Colour shows the year-on-year change in the number of people newly referred to the Probation Service by the courts, published annually by The Probation Service for each county.
- [Probation and supervised suspended sentences](/metrics/probation_supervision_orders.md): Colour shows the year-on-year change in the number of probation orders and fully suspended sentences with supervision, published annually by The Probation Service for each county.
- [Median purchaser age](/metrics/purchaser_age.md): CSO's Frontier Series estimate of the median age of residential property buyers in each area, from the same administrative match used for median sale price. Based on a small number of completed sales in some areas -- see each area's own figure for its underlying sample size before comparing it to a larger area's.
- [Rainfall](/metrics/rainfall.md): Monthly rainfall, one representative station per county
- [Property prices](/metrics/rppi.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in CSO's house price index for the region each area belongs to. Areas in the same CSO region share a colour, because that is the level the index is published at.
- [Median sale price](/metrics/sale_price.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in the median price actually paid, from the Property Price Register. Published for each county; a separate, annual figure from CSO's own CRP15 series is also published for each local electoral area, but the two are not directly comparable -- different publisher, different cadence. Medians move sharply in small areas -- the quarter must contain at least 30 full-market sales to appear at all.
- [Median resale price](/metrics/sale_price_second_hand.md): Colour shows the 12-month change in the median price paid for a second-hand (previously-owned) home, from the Property Price Register. New-build sale prices are checked separately against CSO's own published figures and currently show an unexplained gap, so are not published here — see this stat's own caveat.
- [Social benefits per person](/metrics/social_benefits_per_person.md): Social benefits and other current transfers received per person, by county.
- [Drug and alcohol treatment](/metrics/treatment.md): Published for Ireland as a whole -- there is no county breakdown, so this cannot be mapped by area.
- [Mean weekly earnings](/metrics/weekly_earnings_mean.md): Average weekly earnings per employee, by county -- pulled upward by high earners (see caveats); the median figure is a better guide to a typical wage.
- [Median weekly earnings](/metrics/weekly_earnings_median.md): Median weekly earnings per employee, by county -- the more typical figure for a given county than the mean.

## Caveats

- [2016 and 2022 figures cover different areas](/caveats/2016-and-2022-figures-cover-different-areas-cff688ad.md): Cork City Council's boundary was extended in 2019, taking in a large area previously part of Cork County. This series' 2016 figure covers the smaller, pre-2019 city; its 2022 figure covers the larger,
- [2016 and 2022 figures cover different areas](/caveats/2016-and-2022-figures-cover-different-areas-f3c821a0.md): Cork County Council's boundary was reduced in 2019, losing a large area to the expanded Cork City. This series' 2016 figure covers the larger, pre-2019 county; its 2022 figure covers the smaller, post
- [8 of 12 candidate years (2015-2026)](/caveats/8-of-12-candidate-years-2015-2026-ba9f467d.md): DHLGH publishes one amalgamated PDF per year. Of the twelve years from 2015 (the first budget under the current 31-authority structure) to 2026, four could not be extracted or reconciled reliably agai
- [A commencement notice precedes building, it is not a completion](/caveats/a-commencement-notice-precedes-building-it-is-no-97e9f7dd.md): A commencement notice is a legal notification that construction work is about to begin, collected via the Building Control Management System (BCMS). It measures intent to start building, not homes fin
- [A completion means an ESB connection](/caveats/a-completion-means-an-esb-connection-2f4f7be2.md): CSO counts a dwelling as complete when it is connected to the ESB network for the first time. This is a proxy, and it has edge cases: a home vacant long enough to be disconnected can appear as a compl
- [A council can tender on behalf of its neighbours](/caveats/a-council-can-tender-on-behalf-of-its-neighbours-92b626ab.md): Councils run joint regional frameworks, where one council is the contracting authority for several others. The source names the client councils in its own 'Name of Client Contracting Authority' field,
- [A council can tender on behalf of its neighbours](/caveats/a-council-can-tender-on-behalf-of-its-neighbours-e2c8be60.md): Councils run joint regional frameworks, where one council is the contracting authority for several others, and the whole record — including its bid count — is published against the lead council. Read
- [A curated selection of diagnosis groups, not the full breakdown](/caveats/a-curated-selection-of-diagnosis-groups-not-the-d3bee4a8.md): CSO publishes discharges across a much finer 169-category hierarchy than shown here, with each broad chapter (for example "circulatory system") containing its own more specific rows (for example "hear
- [A different single-bid figure exists for this council](/caveats/a-different-single-bid-figure-exists-for-this-co-647900b6.md): This is a per-calendar-year figure. StatsMapped's tender-awards pages for this council show a different single-bid percentage, calculated over the trailing 12 months from today rather than a fixed cal
- [A missing apartments figure is counted as none](/caveats/a-missing-apartments-figure-is-counted-as-none-a0844e9c.md): For some quarters CSO publishes a houses figure but no apartments figure, almost always for councils where apartment building is rare. Those quarters are counted as houses only, the same as the permis
- [A modelled estimate, not a direct county survey](/caveats/a-modelled-estimate-not-a-direct-county-survey-df3b9339.md): CSO does not survey household income at county level directly -- these figures are modelled estimates, allocating national and regional income data to counties using administrative and survey sources,
- [A permission granted, not a home built](/caveats/a-permission-granted-not-a-home-built-e5492e19.md): This counts planning permissions granted for new dwellings, not dwellings actually built. Permission is an early step — some approved schemes are delayed, scaled back or never built out, and the gap b
- [A permission granted, not a home built](/caveats/a-permission-granted-not-a-home-built-fbf70b3a.md): This counts planning permissions granted for new dwellings, not dwellings actually built. Permission is an early step -- some approved schemes are delayed, scaled back or never built out, and the gap
- [A quarter is withheld until both lender types have reported](/caveats/a-quarter-is-withheld-until-both-lender-types-ha-0c34db8b.md): The Central Bank publishes bank and non-bank figures separately each quarter, and they do not always arrive together — a quarter is only shown here once both are in, so the total is never a partial co
- [A regional figure, not a county one](/caveats/a-regional-figure-not-a-county-one-75290aeb.md): This is CSO's region-level figure (the same 8-region grouping used elsewhere on this site for property prices) -- a wider area than one county alone. A council-level figure is also published on this s
- [A single bathing water can swing a small authority's whole figure](/caveats/a-single-bathing-water-can-swing-a-small-authori-a5f6ca83.md): Some local authorities have only one or two designated bathing waters. One site's rating there is the whole figure, so it moves in large steps and is not comparable to a larger coastal authority with
- [A single scheme can dominate a council's quarter](/caveats/a-single-scheme-can-dominate-a-council-s-quarter-05dbf78b.md): 31 councils is a much smaller base than the 8 regions this dataset is also published for, so one large development finishing can swing a quarter's total sharply. Percentage changes at this level are l
- [A single scheme can dominate an LEA's quarter](/caveats/a-single-scheme-can-dominate-an-lea-s-quarter-f0000779.md): A Local Electoral Area is far smaller than a county, so one apartment or housing scheme finishing can multiply a quarter's total on its own. Percentage changes at this level are large and ordinary, an
- [A snapshot on 1 June, not a year-round figure](/caveats/a-snapshot-on-1-june-not-a-year-round-figure-d9160204.md): Cattle numbers move throughout the year as calves are born and animals are moved, finished or exported. This is a single day's count, so only comparisons against the same date a year earlier are meani
- [A spelling below the threshold is missing from the total](/caveats/a-spelling-below-the-threshold-is-missing-from-t-15163dd5.md): A spelling used by fewer than three babies in a year is not published, so it contributes nothing to that year's combined figure. Combined totals are therefore a floor, not a complete count.
- [A volunteer network, not automated sensors](/caveats/a-volunteer-network-not-automated-sensors-72193cf9.md): Most of these stations are read manually by volunteer observers, not automated instruments — Met Éireann's own long-running Cooperative Climate Network. Occasional gaps in an otherwise long record usu
- [A waiting list is not a scorecard of hospital performance](/caveats/a-waiting-list-is-not-a-scorecard-of-hospital-pe-19bc64ef.md): The number of people waiting reflects how many are being REFERRED at least as much as how well a hospital is treating them. A hospital seeing more patients than ever can still show a rising list if re
- [Accommodation-type figures overlap and must not be summed](/caveats/accommodation-type-figures-overlap-and-must-not-5e2471d9.md): The counts of people accessing Private Emergency, Supported Temporary, Temporary Emergency and Other Accommodation do not reliably add up to the region's Total Adults figure — checked directly across
- [Adopted budget, not actual spend](/caveats/adopted-budget-not-actual-spend-f077c7ee.md): These figures are each council's ADOPTED annual revenue budget -- what it planned to raise and spend for the year -- not the audited actual outturn. DHLGH's Annual Financial Statements record what was
- [Adult and child patients are combined](/caveats/adult-and-child-patients-are-combined-54571a00.md): NTPF publishes separate Adult and Child waiting lists for most hospitals; the two are summed here into one hospital total per band, since both are on the same list and a person can only be on one. A s
- [An average hides the spread](/caveats/an-average-hides-the-spread-f46856bb.md): A county or council figure is a population-weighted average of its electoral divisions and hides large variation within the area -- Dublin City's divisions run from well below to well above the nation
- [Bands may differ from NTPF's own published total by a patient or two](/caveats/bands-may-differ-from-ntpf-s-own-published-total-3bab0551.md): In roughly a quarter to a third of the source's own monthly rows, the four waiting-time bands NTPF publishes do not sum to exactly the Total figure NTPF publishes alongside them, always by one or two
- [Based on a small number of awards](/caveats/based-on-a-small-number-of-awards-8ebe66cd.md): A council's rate can be based on very few contracts with a recorded bid count across 2023-2025 — a small number of contracts can move a rate built on a small base by several percentage points. Where s
- [Based on payroll (Revenue) records, not a survey](/caveats/based-on-payroll-revenue-records-not-a-survey-36fe361e.md): This figure comes from administrative payroll data reported to Revenue, not a labour-force survey. It covers PAYE-visible earnings and does not capture self-employment income the way a survey-based ea
- [Broken down by age](/caveats/broken-down-by-age-3560adee.md): Figures are shown by age. The table's own 'All ages' total is not shown alongside them, so no figure is counted twice.
- [Broken down by age group](/caveats/broken-down-by-age-group-87f3cd60.md): Figures are shown by age group. The table's own 'All ages' total is not shown alongside them, so no figure is counted twice.
- [Broken down by single year of age](/caveats/broken-down-by-single-year-of-age-b658e7e2.md): Figures are shown by single year of age. The table's own 'All ages' total is not shown alongside them, so no figure is counted twice.
- [Built from Census measures](/caveats/built-from-census-measures-f30c65e8.md): The index is a composite of Census variables (unemployment, education, social class, lone parents, tenure, crowding, age dependency), so comparing it with any one of those is partly circular.
- [Census years only, not a continuous series](/caveats/census-years-only-not-a-continuous-series-3abffbb0.md): This is CSO's actual Census of Population count, taken once every five years (2011, 2016, 2022) — not a modelled annual estimate. A figure from a year between censuses is not published here at all; th

It is not available, and is not backfilled, for earlier months.
- [Combines bank and non-bank lenders](/caveats/combines-bank-and-non-bank-lenders-d6611b6e.md): This figure sums two Central Bank categories: 'Banks' (mortgage originated and still held by a bank) and 'Non-Banks' (retail credit firms and loan owners, including entities that bought distressed mor

- [Cork City and Cork County have no per-capita figure](/caveats/cork-city-and-cork-county-have-no-per-capita-fig-46362b9a.md): CSO's Census 2022 publishes one combined population figure for Cork City and Cork County following the 2019 boundary change, not a per-authority split. Rather than manufacture a split, both authoritie
- [Cork City and Cork County split only from 2022](/caveats/cork-city-and-cork-county-split-only-from-2022-ad7cedf5.md): CSO's own combined county/city census table publishes one figure for Cork City and Cork County together for 2011 and 2016 — the city boundary was extended in 2019, so a clean pre/post split back to a
